What if you could have all of your federal loans from PT school forgiven in 10 years? For a lot of students who will pay back their loans over 15 or 30 years, that probably sounds pretty good! Well, if you are willing to work in the public sector, you could be federal student loan-free in 10 years.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program through the federal government forgives the balance of your Direct Loan consolidation after ten years if you work in public service. (You can log into your Sallie Mae account to find out if you have Direct Loans. If you don’t, you can actually re-consolidate them into Direct Loans, but the ten year time frame starts when you refinance.)
Even better news? The U.S. armed forces and the VA hire civilian physical therapists all over the country. Or, if you teach in a PT department in a state school, that counts too! In fact, as long as you work full-time in public service, you don’t even have to work as a physical therapist or PT assistant for the ten years! It’s worth checking out. The PSLF website has information you on eligibility, qualifying loans, and more.
