Hi, everyone, my name is Alex, and I’m currently taking medication and seeing a therapist(I suffer from depression and anxiety). Still, I wonder if any effective mental health occupational therapy interventions could help me improve my daily functioning and overall quality of life. What does occupational therapy provide?

Yes, Alex, mental health occupational therapy can benefit individuals suffering from anxiety and depression.

    Occupational therapy provides:

Activity scheduling: In occupational therapy, therapists work with you to schedule your daily life activities and routine to include enjoyable and meaningful activities. Activity scheduling is vital to reduce isolation and negative thoughts caused by solitude.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy: In occupational therapy, therapists use cognitive-behavioral therapy to predict patterns that cause negative thinking, and they help you develop strategies to deal with adverse situations better.

Techniques to relax: Therapists, during occupational therapy, make sure that you develop breathing techniques to enhance progressive muscle relaxation, which leads to reduced anxiety and stress.

Supervised exposure: Occupational therapists can help you gradually go through supervised/graded exposure to things that trigger your anxiety so that it does not make you uncomfortable.

Social skills training: Occupational therapy is an excellent way to train your skills if you have social anxiety, and it can help you improve your social skills.

Therefore if you are suffering from anxiety and depression, you don’t need to worry about it. You can get mental health occupational therapy, and your condition will improve
